SANCTUARY 2021

SANCTUARY 2021 will be built on the sidewalk in front of the Salt Lake City and County Building at the 2021 Utah Pride Festival. It will be featured in the Secret Garden. The structure is designed with parametric computer modeling, reimagining traditional forms of sacred space. It is constructed of cardboard tubes reclaimed from the recycling stream. Festival participants adorn the structure with thoughts, messages, dedications, and confessions, that give it an emergent life of its own.

Constructed under pandemic restrictions, SANCTUARY 2021 was erected on the sidewalk in front of the Salt Lake City and County Building at the 2021 Utah Pride Festival. It featured a Secret Garden. In a break from the first year, the structure was built with recycled cardboard tubes. The project was built almost entirely of recycled material diverted from the waste steam. Attendees wrote secrets on small pieces of paper that blew in the wind, creating a sounds that amplified with the wind and helped to create a sense of privacy and connection to nature.
